### Care and Maintenance Tips for Your Swiss Army Knife

A Swiss Army Knife is an investment in quality and versatility, and with the right care, it can last a lifetime. Maintaining your Swiss Army Knife is crucial not only to preserve its condition but also to ensure it performs optimally whenever you need it. Here are some essential tips for caring for your Swiss Army Knife:

#### Regular Cleaning
**After Use**: Always clean your knife, especially after use in harsh conditions or with materials that can corrode metal or gunk up the mechanisms (like sap or dirt).
**Soap and Water**: Wash the blades and tools with warm, soapy water. This is particularly important if the knife has come into contact with acidic substances like fruit juices or salty environments, which can accelerate corrosion.
**Dry Thoroughly**: After washing, dry each component thoroughly to prevent rust. Open and close the tools several times while drying to eliminate any moisture trapped in the mechanisms.

#### Lubrication
**Oil Application**: Apply a drop of machine oil to the pivot points of the blades and tools. This lubrication helps maintain smooth operation and prevents rust. Do this every few months, or more frequently if your knife feels stiff or squeaky.
**Choose the Right Oil**: Use a light oil that won’t gum up over time, such as mineral oil or specialty knife oils such as Victorinox Multi-tool Oil

#### Sharpening
**Regular Sharpening**: Keep your knife sharp with regular sharpening. A dull knife is more dangerous to use as it requires more force to cut items.
**Correct Tools**: Use a whetstone or a sharpening steel designed for small blades. Avoid overly aggressive sharpening tools that can remove too much material and shorten the life of your knife. A range of Sharpeners are available from Extac Australia
**Technique**: Maintain the original angle of the blade and use gentle, consistent strokes. Sharpen both sides evenly to keep the blade balanced.

#### Preventing Rust
**Avoid Moisture**: Store your Swiss Army Knife in a dry environment to prevent rust. If you’re in a humid area, consider using silica gel packets in the storage area to absorb excess moisture.
**Regular Checks**: Inspect your knife periodically for signs of rust. If rust appears, address it immediately with a rust remover suitable for small blades, then oil the affected area. Rust removers and knife care

#### Storage
**Proper Storage**: When not in use, keep your Swiss Army Knife in a clean, dry place. Avoid storing it in leather pouches which can trap moisture, opting instead for breathable materials.

### Handle With Care
While Swiss Army Knives are built to be durable, they should be handled with care. Avoid using the knife as a pry bar or screwing with excessive force, as these actions can damage the tools.

By following these care and maintenance tips, you will ensure your Swiss Army Knife remains a reliable tool for all your adventures and daily tasks. Check out more products and tips at Extac Australia.

History and Evolution of Swiss Army Knives
Swiss Army Knives have been synonymous with precision, durability, and versatility since their inception. This iconic tool has a storied history that dates back to 1884 when Karl Elsener I opened his cutlery workshop in Ibach, Switzerland. What started as a modest operation quickly transformed into a global phenomenon, shaping the multi-tool industry and becoming a staple in both everyday and extraordinary settings.

The Origins
The journey began when Karl Elsener established the Association of Swiss Master Cutlers in 1891 and secured his first contract to supply the Swiss Army with soldier’s knives. This milestone marked the birth of the Swiss Army Knife, known then for its robustness and utility. In 1897, Elsener patented the "Original Swiss Officer’s and Sports Knife," which has since evolved into the "Original Swiss Army Knife™" known around the world.

Milestones of Innovation
In 1909, the brand took a personal turn as Elsener adopted his mother’s name, Victoria, and the Cross & Shield emblem was registered as a trademark. The introduction of stainless steel in 1921 was a revolutionary development for the cutlery industry, leading to the hybrid name "Victorinox," a combination of "Victoria" and "Inox."

Victorinox continued to innovate with the setup of the world’s first all-electric hardening plant in 1931, ensuring unmatched quality in all of their knives. This period also saw the expansion of their product range beyond traditional knives, setting the stage for a global brand evolution.

Expanding Horizons
The post-World War II era marked a significant boost in international recognition, with the US Army purchasing large quantities of Swiss Army Knives for their soldiers in Europe. The 1970s brought further acclaim when the Original Swiss Army Knife™ was included in the permanent design collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. By 1978, even NASA had recognized the utility of these knives, ordering them for space missions.

A Modern Global Brand
The turn of the millennium saw Victorinox not only reaffirming its commitment to quality and innovation but also expanding into new territories with product lines in watches, travel gear, and even fragrances. The acquisition of Wenger in 2005 integrated further Swiss craftsmanship, focusing on leveraging both brands' strengths.

Today, Victorinox stands as a testament to more than 140 years of innovation, quality, and skilled craftsmanship. Celebrating over a century since the patent of the original design, Victorinox continues to be a leader in utility and design, meeting the needs of users around the globe.

THE MATERIALS USED IN VICTORINOX SWISS ARMY KNIVES

Victorinox explains - We make products so that you can be best prepared. Steel is where we started but innovation is at our core, meaning that we are constantly searching for materials with new functionality that will meet the needs of our customers better. Here’s an overview of some of our materials, from the classic to the innovative/modern.

STAINLESS STEEL

Stainless Steel is not just part of the Victorinox name (“inox”) but it’s also the backbone of the Victorinox business, it's used in everthing from knives to tools to watches to perfume bottles.

Victorinox sources stainless steel from all over Europe and have been working with certain suppliers for almost 100 years, meaning that Victorinox can count on receiving the best quality from a source they trust.

They use Martensitic stainless steel because it can be hardened, which is a must to create strong blades and tools.

What’s not used directly in production is never wasted – they collect the remaining steel and convert the grinding powder into pellets, send it back to their suppliers where it is turned back into steel.

ALOX

Alox is another iconic Victorinox material that they’ve been using since 1957 with the introduction of the first Pioneer knife. It also featured on the Soldier’s Knife which was redesigned in 1961 and used until 2008.

This name stands for the protective layer on the aluminum base material. It’s achieved cult status thanks to its unique pattern and haptics which make it easier to grip, while being lightweight and especially robust, thanks to the hardened oxide layer which helps to protect against damage and corrosion.

During production, the scales are punched from aluminum and then embossed, before going through a process called Eloxal which uses anodic oxidation to create a protective layer.
